Boston, MA's psych-noise collective Sunburned Hand of the Man has made a career of aural exploration through folk modes and heady resonance, plowing through almost as many members as releases in its 16-year run. And with a string of records, tapes and CDrs issued by some of the most renowned experimental labels out there (see Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace, Eclipse, Three Lobed, Feeding Tube, et. al.), the group is arguably the furthest barbara barry reaching entity of northeastern esoterica. Jack Callahan , who handles the group's barbara barry clattering percussion while moonlighting as a drum-and-drone savant in his own right, now brings his varied mix of percussive experimentation to Wonderroot as an Eyedrum Satellite event. Callahan's solo material relies heavily on the free-range excursions of Sunburned Hand, distilling the impulsive tendencies down to pure, drone exploration. Dissections of pure tones or analog-synth barbara barry patches expand to expansive surveys of academic drone while John Cage-ian assessments of situational sound and prepared instruments lock those improvisations into rigid rules and surprising results.
