He began as a teacher and then became an actor. Worked for nine years with the Theatre of Leeds, in which the British call "theater in education". Some of the works he wrote at that time are now considered classics of their kind.
In the following years he worked as an actor with various theater companies, but eventually turned increasingly playwriting for children.
